The first question that we get from developers when they hear about the instant server deploy, native performance and real-time and auto scaling features of our Linux containers is “How do I migrate my cloud server to your infrastructure?” Up until now the answer was - the same way you would transfer a virtual machine to a new one. But we know that’s easier said than done.

Migrating virtual machines has always been a time-consuming, complicated and all in all a nerve-wrecking process. To make that a less daunting task, today we are launching two new features that take the hassle off the cloud server migration process.

A One-of-a-kind Auto-migration Script

If you are not comfortable with delegating the sensitive task of cloud server data migration to anyone else, we now have a way to help out without interfering. Our one-of-a-kind auto migration script automates most of the work that goes into transferring your cloud server data yourself and executes the process for you. That way you keep control over the process, but minimize the hassle considerably.

When started, our self-service migration script connects to your current Linux cloud server over SSH, copies all data on the server - files, databases, emails, even the same OS configuration that you’ve been using so far - and migrates it all to your new Linux container with Kyup. Once it finishes, it only takes a reboot of your container with us to have your files up and you're all set. The transfer runtime depends on the size of your VM and may vary between a couple of minutes to about an hour. Still, it’s an hour that you get to spend doing something productive, rather than synching files and databases manually one by one.

Currently our migration script is tested and works seamlessly with CentOS 6.6, Debian Wheezy or Ubuntu 14.04/12.04 distributions and cloud hosting providers like Amazon, DigitalOcean, Linode and Rackspace. If, however, you find any issues with other Linux distributions, we would love to hear from you, so that we can look into that.

For more information on the process, we have a handy step-by-step tutorial on how to migrate your cloud server to a Linux container from Kyup.

Free Professional Server Migration

If you’d still rather have someone else deal with the whole transfer process for you, we also offer a free professional server migration by our tech support team. If you don’t want or have the time to deal with transferring files, databases and apps yourself, we will take care of all that for you completely free of charge. This option is easily accessible through our HelpDesk.

Both cloud server migration options are designed with ease of use and flexibility in mind, so that developers and tech professionals can have the freedom to try our elastic high-performance container infrastructure without a huge investment of time and money. That’s ultimately our primary goal - to empower our users to build, launch and scale web projects with maximum efficiency.
